Pre-arrival information
BEFORE LEAVING FOR ITALY
Before leaving for Italy, ensure you have packed the following essential documents since without them you will be unable to comply with the essential Italian bureaucratic procedures
If you are STUDENT you need these essential documents:
- Passport or a valid Identity Card (ID)
- Visa, if required (please make sure that you start your visa application well in advance, because the procedure could take months)
- Health Insurance (it is recommended an International Health Insurance for a period of at least 4-6 months)
- Documents demonstrating adequate economic means of support to stay in Italy
- All the documentation required for the enrollment at the University
- Passport photos (white background)
If you are a PHD STUDENT you need these essential documents:
- Passport or a valid Identity Card (ID)
- Visa, if required (please make sure that you start tour visa application well in advance, because the procedure could take months)
- Health Insurance (it is recommended an International Health Insurance for a period of at least 4-6 months)
- Official communication of admission with scholarship awarding and confirmation of accommodation
- All the documentation required for the enrollment at the University
- Passport photos (white background
If you are a VISITING you need these essential documents:
- Passport or a valid Identity Card (ID)
- Visa, if required (please make sure that you start tour visa application well in advance, because the procedure could take months)
- Health Insurance Insurance (it is recommended an International Health Insurance for a period of at least 4-6 months)
- Hosting Agreement or Invitation letter
- Passport photos (white background).
EU/EAA CITIZENS
VISA: if you are a citizen of a EU country you can enter Italy with a passport or ID card and are entitled to stay for study or work as long as they like.
RESIDENCE PERMIT as EU citizen you don’t need to apply for any residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) even for visits exceeding three months.
HEALTH INSURANCE: as EU citizen you benefit from the new European Health Insurance Card. The card is issued by the local health authorities
NON EU/EAA CITIZENS
VISA: as NON EU citizen, you must apply for a visa .
Applications must be submitted to the Italian Embassy/Consulate in the home country.
Procedures are subject to change so it is worthwhile to first contact the embassy/consulate or check on the website for information before going personally to the consular offices.

RESIDENCE PERMIT : as NON EU citizen with a D visa, you must apply for a residence permit within 8 working days from your arrival in Italy (or in the Schengen Area).
The residence permit must be renewed every year.
