Introduction
Albania is one of the countries candidates to join the EU in the next future. Connections with Italy have been always rather continuous over the years and the relationship has been reinforced from the educational and economical perspectives in the last decades. The current project intends to consolidate the educative and research connections already started (Computer Science and Veterinary-Biology), and to explore new fields of cooperation (Chemistry and Law). The present proposal will involve as partners the University of Tirana (UT), the Agricultural University of Tirana (AUT) and the European University of Tirana (UET).
UT, founded in 1957, is the largest and one of the most important public HEIs in Albania. It includes 6 faculties and 174 programs in the 3 study cycles. In 2021, UNICAM Computer Science Department and UT Informatics Department started a cooperation aimed at drafting a Double Degree (DD) program with a twin study program at graduate level. Thanks to the ongoing collaboration in CS area, both HEIs found out the possibility to expand their joint activity to other common strategic areas, particularly the chemical sciences.
UBT is the unique centre in Albania for undergraduate and graduate studies, scientific research, and training in the area of agriculture and food. UBT structured the School of Veterinary Medicine (VMS) in 1952 and it is the only HEI providing veterinary education in Albania. While UNICAM considers this collaboration essential due to VMS centrality and uniqueness in Albania, UBT believes that this partnership will create a unique opportunity of knowledge exchange since the UNICAM School of Biosciences and Veterinary Medicine (SBVM) represents an important Academic pole in the Adriatic region. More recently, the collaboration has expanded to the biomonitoring of the quality of the marine water and sediments in areas used for aquaculture.
UET is a leading HEI in Albania, established in full compliance with the Bologna Charter, offering study programmes from bachelor to PhD. UET aims to be a driver for the development of knowledge in the Albanian society, a centre of excellence for students’ education, a centre of expertise in social, political, legal, economic, and information technology studies with a wider impact in its Country and beyond, as well as a centre of excellence in scientific research. To date the cooperation between UNICAM and UET has been limited to isolated scientific collaborations, but now the two HEIs would like to take a step further. This project will create the environment for knowledge transfer and exchange of best practices in the field of comparative studies in public and private law.
